Ceremonial Masks / Culture Blog
|
This course will select a single native culture in Africa and South America as well as a Native American tribe and explore how that culture is reflected in the masks they use in spiritual and ceremonial rites. In addition to studying the cultures, students will make their own mask in the style of each of the cultures.

Ceremonial masksWelcome to a spring exploration of how native cultures in Africa, South America and Northwestern Native Americans expressed their creativity through masks. We'll look at how and why they made the masks they made and then make one of our own in much the same way. It will be a trip to three continents without leaving Downtown Beaverton. |

Puppets CourseThis course will focus on making hand puppets. The first puppet we will make is a sock puppet. We will look at the variety of ways you can make hand puppets. The class will then select a published puppet play or write a simple puppet show script ourselves before making the characters in the story. We plan to design and build a simple puppet theater. If possible the students will present their puppet shows on the last day of the session to 1 or more other classes and parents. |
