Intermediate Painting Projects Blog

This is a studio painting class designed for students who have had some previous foundation in painting, including the use of the different types of paints (acrylic, watercolor, pastels, etc) and who are ready to work in more challenging, long-term individually-designed projects. There is also room for the student who has not had much experience, yet is both excited about the class and able to work independently. Students will learn to design paintings from start to finish, beginning with ideas and brainstorming in their sketchbooks, then building a frame and stretching their own canvas. Next they will prepare the surface and create their masterpiece. We will finish by decorating the sides and/or adding frames to the work. Students will grow in their understanding of the various mediums, including acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and mixed media. I always try to honor self-expression and creative ideas, encouraging kids to go where they are excited. I will be presenting them with ideas and challenges for them to consider and past and present artists' work to encourage and stimulate their own paintings. I love to paint, and I love helping others discover their creative selves and potential!

please bring to class on Tuesday:

I just wanted to remind everyone that Tuesday we will be starting our portrait paintings on canvas. (11x14)
Please bring to class
1) decision of who will be painted (or "what")
2) your idea of how to portray that person or thing, showing the "true identity" of it. Remember if you are going a more symbolic or non traditional route by not painting the face of a person, that's totally ok with me as long as you have a thought out reason behind how your alternative idea portrays "the true identity"
3) this is really important because I'd like it if we could start on the canvas Tuesday: please bring references to look at, usually that means photos or pictures of some kind, or it could be other things. if you are painting yourself, it could be a mirror even.

:o) this should be fun!
remember, I'm always supportive of your own individual expression of the ideas I give you or the lesson we have planned, as long as they are thought out, it's always fun to see how everyone has different ideas and ways of achieving things!

Welcome to ART211 Intermediate Painting Projects (tues 2:30)

Welcome to ART211 Intermediate Painting Projects! (tuesdays at 2:30)
I'm exited for the start of the new year this week!
In this class there will be a lot of room for guided self direction and individual expression and interest. Students will learn to design paintings from the start to the finish, beginning with ideas and brainstorming in their sketchbooks, and building a frame and stretching their own canvas and preparing the surface. We will finish by decorating the sides and/or adding frames to the work, to finish off their pieces.
I always try to honor self expression and creative ideas, encouraging kids to think outside the box and go where they are exited. I will be presenting them with ideas and challenges for them to consider and past and present artist's work to encourage and stimulate their own paintings.
I will also encourage each student to find artists on their own that they are interested in and share that with the class. We can learn so much from each other and other artists in the community.
This fall, I would really like to try to plan a trip to the art museum or possible first or last Thursday. If you could personally email me and let me know what afternoon days work for you, then I can hopefully find a time that the whole class could participate. Mondays are a possibility, as well as the weekend. I am hoping to do a trip before the weather gets too bad, so by the end of October. I would like to do a field trip or have a guest come in for winter and spring as well.
This year, there is a (free) open art studio that begins at 3:45 to 4:45. Please feel free to stay longer after our class ends at 3:30 to paint if you can, sometimes that extra time is great to have!

Please bring to class on the first day:
sketchbook (no smaller than a paperback book, 8x10 ish is great (or bigger if you'd like)
if you would like to keep some special supplies in class, you can bring a small shoebox or ziplock bag, and I will keep them with my things so they are available to you for class.
remember to wear clothes that you can get paint on that doesn't wash out!

I'm so exited to see you all tuesday and to start painting! :o)
